Do you know what ROI stands for?
Russ: “I don’t want to make a little bit of money every day, I want to make a fuck ton of money all at once.”
Richard: silence
Russ: “ROI baby. Do you know what that stands for?”
Jared: “Return on Invest —”
Russ: (interrupts) “Radio on the Internet.”
This is one of my favorite scenes from Silicon Valley.
If you’ve never seen it, go watch it — it’s on HBO Max. It’s a painfully accurate metaphor for life inside a startup, whether you’re a tech company or a budding eCom brand.
We all know that ROI stands for return on investment, but Russ Hanneman, the slimy investor money guy, made a few billion “putting radio on the internet,” so he decided to rename it to radio on the internet.
It’s hard to explain, here’s the full scene.
Unfortunately, brands never ask me how much radio I can put on the internet for them.
They’re interested in their return on investment, a true ROI.
While that question can be difficult to answer for some brands, for others, it’s very simple.
They paid x and made y.
Example: This brand has paid me $30k over the last year — I’ve made them $531.03 K over the same time frame.
More specifically, I’ve taken their organic search revenue from $12k/mo to $74k/mo.
I wrote a full case study breaking down everything I did to make it happen.
Radio on the internet, baby.
Catch you on Friday.
